Who we are
HOOGHLY DOCK & PORT ENGINEERS LIMITED (HDPEL), situated at Kolkata, is one of the oldest shipyards in India. It was established in 1819 in private sector and called as Hooghly Docking & Engineering Company Limited. Subsequently, Port Engineering Works (PEW), which was with M/S. Andrew Yule & Company, was merged with Hooghly Docking & Engineering Company Limited, the Hooghly Dock & Port Engineers Limited (HDPEL) was formed. As both the units of the company had been suffering heavy losses for want of fresh investment and modernization, through an act of Parliament entitled” The Hooghly Docking & Engineering Company Limited (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertaking) Act, 1984″, Government of India had nationalized the Company so as to utilize the available infrastructure through necessary investment for modernization and increase the capacity for shipbuilding and ship repairing in the country.
The nationalized Company named Hooghly Dock & Port Engineers Limited had remained with the Ministry of Industry till 27.07.1986 and thereafter transferred to the Ministry of Surface Transport. Presently, HDPEL is under Administrative control of Ministry of Shipping, Government of India.
